Moisture expansion: Activation energy versus firing temperature

resumo

In recent years, the adopted civil construction techniques, the changes in the manufacture processes and the architectural dictates, have contributed to the resurgence of interest in moisture expansion of ceramic materials and its consequences. This work describes how a dynamic test method can be used to evaluate the moisture expansion of a given ceramic body in a particular moist environment, and determine the activation energy of the phenomenon. The test results can also be extrapolated for different moisture and temperature conditions and longer periods of time. This, in turn, enables an educated choice of the processing conditions (viz. firing temperature) that will produce the most moisture resistant material from a given formulation.
