Scientific Interests

AGil´s scientific interests have been increasingly developed with CICECO-Aveiro Institute of Materials, since the genesis of this Associate Laboratory (2002). More recently, her interests in the biological testing of materials has justified her intention to carry out scientific activities also in the context of newly created The Discoveries Centre for Regenerative and Precision Medicine, University of Aveiro, Campus de Santiago, 3810-193 Aveiro, Portugal.

Present interests

  • Metabolomics (based mainly on NMR) of human biofluids, tissues and cellular systems for the biochemical characterisation of diseases: biomarker search for early diagnosis, prognosis and monitoring of diseases and therapeutics, while considering the effects of lifestyle and nutritional habits. Biological validation of metabolomic hypotheses through correlation studies of different omic data.

Main diseases investigated: prenatal/newborn diseases and cancer (mainly lung, renal, osteosarcoma, pancreatic). Other diseases: children’s early carie, asthma, age-related macular degeneration.

  • Metabolomics testing of bio- and/or nano-materials for assessment of in vitroandin vivo biological performance: tissue regeneration, drug delivery, biocompatibility and biotoxicity.
  • Characterisation of stem cell differentiation through metabolomics to monitor and guide lineage development and regeneration of engineered tissues.
  • Metabolomic assessment of environmental effects (or exposomes) on human metabolism: heavy metals, other pollutants, nanoparticles.
  • Metabolomics for the routine quality control of products and processes in the food industry: brewing, wine and beverages industries.

Other interests

  • Structure/function relationships in foods: cereal proteins and polysaccharide gels.
  • Structure/function relationships in cork and other lignocellulosic materials.
  • Rheological-NMR (rheo-NMR) of polymers: molecular origins of polymer rheological properties.
