Preliminary studies on the development of lime based mortars for adobe masonry

resumo

Built heritage is vast and distinctive in terms of the traditional structural supports and tendertypes, reflecting also different ages and living styles. In some regions, the most common structures are that using adobe masonry, with or without tiles, and renders based on lime mortars. In order to develop compatible products it is important to characterize materials in these systems and to study original supports and renders. With the aim of making preliminary studies on mortars for adobe masonry buildings, first, the support material was characterized in terms of composition. Mortars were formulated with different binders but with the same selected siliceous aggregate. A ceramic brick powder was also used in one of the aerial lime mortar formulations for compatibility reasons with the adobe. Product characteristics like the mechanical properties and capillary absorption were measured. Preliminary evaluation of the formulated mortars properties indicates a certain compatibility with the adobe masonry characteristics.
