Core-Shells of SrAl2O4:Ce(III), Ln Phosphor Coated by TiO2 Nanotube and Nanowire-Shaped Structures

We report on the development of luminescent core–shell nanoprobes of SrAl2O4:Ce(III), Ln coated by a thin layer of TiO2 nanotube and nanowire shaped-structures. The core–shell nanoprobes were obtained through an encapsulation process by aging the luminescent particles in a Na2TiO3 solution in the absence or in the presence of poly-(ethylene glicol) (PEG) fillowed by heat treatment. The surface modifications were investigated by electrophoreses, electronic conductivity, SEM, HR-TEM, 13C and 27Al NRM MAS spectroscopy. Semi-crystalline titania shell layers with a thickness in the range of ∼60–300 nm, consists of short ordered anatase nanotubes and nanowires with diameter varying in the range of 5–40 nm. 27Al MAS NMR data demonstrate that only small modifications were created on the host lattice core-structure peaking at 74.85 ppm from the Ti-bonds shell, while 13C MAS NMR data for hybrid coatings revealed the presence of OCH2CH2 functional groups covalently to the inorganic surface. A facile approach for the synthesis of multifunctional photocatalytic luminescent core–shells presenting elevated stability against hydrolysis in presented.
