João Rocha é Professor Catedrático de Química na Universidade de Aveiro, e Director do Instituto de Materiais de Aveiro-CICECO, o maior Instituto Nacional de Investigação em Ciência e Engenharia de Materiais.
PRÉMIOS E DISTINÇÕES
João Rocha (n. 1962) é membro da European Academy of Sciences (EURASC) e Académico Correspondente da Academia das Ciências de Lisboa (Química) desde 2006, Fellow da Royal Society of Chemistry e da Chemistry Europe, e Director do Laboratório Associado "Instituto de Materiais de Aveiro"-CICECO desde 2002. Entre 2012 e 2014 foi membro do Conselho Nacional de Ciência e Tecnologia (presidido pelo Primeiro Ministro). Em 2017 recebeu o prémio Ferreira da Silva (mais alta distinção) e em 2021 o prémio Romão Dias ambos da Sociedade Portuguesa de Química, em 2020 o prémio Luso-Francês da Société Chimique de France, em 2015 o prémio Medinabeitia-Lourenço, da Real Sociedad Española de Química, em 2004 o Prémio de Excelência Científica, da Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT), e em 1990 um prémio do Emmanuel College, Cambridge (por ter terminado o doutoramento em 2 anos).
EDUCAÇÃO
Licenciou-se em Física e Química, via ensino, em 1985, tendo leccionado um ano na Escola Secundária de José Estêvão em Aveiro. Nesse mesmo ano, tornou-se Assistente Estagiário de Departamento de Química da Universidade de Aveiro.
Em 1988 partiu para Inglaterra onde se doutorou em 1990 no Department of Chemistry da University of Cambridge, com uma dissertação sobre Ressonância Magnética Nuclear (RMN) do Estado Sólido de caulinite e materiais relacionados, sob a orientação do Prof. Jacek Klinowski. Durante cerca de um ano, permaneceu neste Departamento e grupo como pós-doutorado, desenvolvendo estudos de RMN de sólidos de materiais zeolíticos.
Em meados de 1991 regressou ao Departamento de Química da Universidade de Aveiro, onde tem permanecido. Fez a Agregação em Química Inorgânica em 1997.
REGISTO CIENTÍFICO
João Rocha publicou cerca de 515 artigos em revistas do Science Citation Index e 25 capítulos de livro, que receberam (Google Scholar) ca. 24,500 citações, h index =76 (Scopus, respectivamente ca. 20,300 e 66), e 5 patentes. Proferiu mais de duas centenas e meia de palestras, muitas convidadas, a maior parte das quais em Congressos e instituições científicas internacionais. Orientou 43 pós-doutorados e 32 alunos de doutoramento. Coordenou mais de duas dezenas de projectos (6 Europeus, como PI nacional) e foi consultor de várias empresas.
ACTIVIDADE PROFISSIONAL
É Professor no Departamento de Química da Univdersidade de Aveiro desde 1991, tendo sido promovido a Professor catedrático em 1999. Em Cambridge, fez tutoriais de Química Inorgânica e de RMN. Em 2010 foi professor convidado da Universidade de Oviedo. Foi Vice-Director do European Multifunctional Materials Institute (follow up do European Network of Excellence, FAME).
João Rocha é membro do júri do prémio IBM Portugal desde 2011, Chair da Commission on Inorganic and Mineral Structures (findo) e consultor da Commission on NMR Crystallography and Related Methods da Internacional Union of Crystallography (IUCr). Foi avaliador do painel PE5 das European Research Council Senior & Starting Grants. Tem tido uma extensa actividade editorial, nomeadamente Royal Society of Chemistry Nanoscience and Nanotechnology Book Series Editor (finda), Chair do editorial board do European Journal of Inorganic Chemistry (até 2014), e membro dos editorial boards de Solid State NMR (findo), Chemistry a European Journal, Solid State Sciences e Editorial Advisor for BMC Chemical Engineering. É membro da Sociedade Portuguesa de Química (esteve na direcção como Secretário Adjunto em 1998-2000), American Chemical Society e Materials Research Society.
Representou a FTC em Chairman of the European Research Councils of Chemistry (2005-07) e no sincrotrão ESRF-Grenoble (2004-06). Foi membro do Conselho Científico (Ciências Exatas) da FCT (2005-06), Secretário Executivo do Instituto de Investigação da Universidade de Aveiro (1999-2000). Coordenou o painel de avaliação de bolsas da FCT na área das Ciências e Engenharia de Materiais. Em 2003 coordenou o painel que avaliou as Unidades de Investigação nesta área. Integra o painel de avaliação dos projectos franceses LABEX.
Tem estado envolvido em alguns projetos (incluindo QREN) com o sector empresarial, desenvolvendo uma atividade regular de consultoria técnico-científica.
O seu grande interesse em divulgação e promoção da Ciência foi motivado pela licenciatura em Ensino de Física e Química. Foi consultor de novos programas de Química do 10º, 11º e 12º anos (2000 – 2002). Em Outubro de 2004 coordenou uma equipa de trabalho que preparou, a pedido do Secretário de Estado da Educação, um documento sobre os principais problemas do ensino da Química em Portugal (Básico e Secundário).
OUTROS INTERESSES
Enquanto Secretário Adjunto da Sociedade Portuguesa de Química (1998-2000), relançou a “Divisão de Ensino e Divulgação da Química” e as “Olimpíadas Nacionais de Química”. Participou na organização em Aveiro da 6th European Conference on Research in Chemical Education. Faz anualmente palestras em Escolas Secundárias e participa em “Cafés de Ciência”, etc. Tem escrito pequenos artigos de divulgação para jornais regionais, Público e Expresso. Participou em alguns programas de rádio e de TV. É apaixonado pela Natureza e é um bird watcher experiente. Outras paixões sérias: karaté (1º Dan), jardinagem, música (ópera, em particular), fotografia da Natureza e poesia.
Interesses científicos
CONTRIBUIÇÕES CIENTÍFICAS PRINCIPAIS
- Concebeu uma nova classe de materiais semelhantes aos zeólitos: silicatos de metais de transição e de lantanídeos com nanoporos (cerca de uma centena de silicatos de Ti, Zr, V, Nb, Cu, Sn, Ca, Y, Ce e lantanídeos, denominados AV e AM). Clarificando, estes materiais são estequiométricos e não zeólitos dopados com metais, cujo arquétipo é o titanossilicato ETS-10 (Nature, 367: 347, 1994). Temos investigado aplicações em luminescência (J. Am. Chem. Soc., 137: 3051, 2015), catálise, adsorção e separação de gases, permute iónica, magnetismo e em agentes de contraste para MRI. Excepcionalmente, um silicato de zircónio nanoporoso encontrou aplicação comercial como fármaco para o tratamento da hipercalemia (excesso de potássio no sangue, Inorg. Chim Acta, 356: 19, 2003).
- Desenvolveu sofisticadas Redes Metalo-Orgânicas e polímeros de coordenação contendo iões lantanídeos (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed., 47: 1080, 2008), em particular para aplicação em nanotermometria (Adv. Funct. Mater., 25: 2824, 2015).
- Desevolveu materiais cristalino híbridos orgânico-inorgânicos ferroeléctricos fotorresponsivos com uma temperatura de Curie alta (423 K), um avanço importante no sentido do desenvolvimento de memórias ferroeléctricas multi-estado, interruptores ópticos, e diversos dispositivos optoelectrónicos (J. Am. Chem. Soc., 142: 16990, 2020).
- Desenvolveu nanopartículas de óxidos para uso como agentes de contraste (ACS Nano, 4: 5339, 2010), em imagem bimodal (Biomater., 33: 925, 2012), e em nanotermometria (Nature Nanotech, 11: 851, 2016; Adv. Mater., 35: 4868, 2013).
- Concebeu materiais para libertação controlada de moléculas pequenas com actividade farmacológica (incluindo NO, J. Am. Chem. Soc., 133: 6396, 2011).
- Concebeu materiais que podem contribuir para a criação de um Mundo mais sustentável (por exemplo, redes anti-mosquito, ACS Appl. Mater. Interfaces, 9: 22112, 2017; e captura do ião uranilo Angew. Chem., Intl. Ed., 58: 1, 2019).
- Criou ca. 40 catalisadores heterogéneos baseados em sílicas mesoporosas funcionalizadas com complexos metálicos (J. Mater. Chem., 12: 1735, 2002).
- Elucidou a estrutura de minerais (em particular argilas) usando técnicas de difracção de raios-X e ressonância magnética nuclear, RMN (J. Am. Chem. Soc., 113: 7100, 1991; J. Am. Chem. Soc., 114: 6867, 1992; Am. Mineral., 103: 812, 2018).
- Foi pioneiro no desenvolvimentos de técnicas de RMN de sólidos para o estudo de núcleos quadrupolares (I>1/2) (Solid State NMR, 21: 61, 2002; Magn. Reson. Chem., 41: 679, 2003) e de 1H (J. Mag. Reson., 199: 111, 2009).
IMPACTO SOCIETAL
Rocha é conhecido principalmente por ter alargado o domínio dos materiais zeolíticos do alumínio aos metais de transição e lantanídeos tendo, nomeadamente, desenvolvido vários silicatos de zircónio nanoporosos. Um destes materiais, AV-13 (Inorg. Chim Acta, 356: 19, 2003), numa forma modificada, veio a ser estudado pela empresa Americana ZS Pharma, agora parte da AstraZeneca, para tratar doentes que sofrem de hipercalemia (excesso de K+ no sangue). Como resultado, o novo fármaco Lokelma (via oral) foi recentemente aprovado pelas agências americana (FDA) e europeia (EMA) do medicamento, estando prestes a chegar ao Mercado.
